Day 68 - Fossicking For Sapphires
We stopped overnight in a place called Emerald, mainly because there was a free campsite there and got talking to another couple who had been there a month fossicking. I have no idea what fossicking is so I just smile and nod occasionally adding the word 'really'. Turns out it is sifting for gems and there is a place called Sapphire up the road where the ground is teeming with.........Sapphires! We stop off for a break, buy ourselves a bag of dirt for $30 and start sifting through it like a couple of pros. Of course the mine chucks in a few stones so you always find something, but we did rather well finding a few larger ones that could be cut into something worthwhile.
Only downside is 3 hours of scratching in the dirt meant that we started our 600km drive at 2:30 and didn't arrive unti after dark having avoided 200km of kangaroo hopping across the road.
This is the view for the past 1000kms...
